Trip to the Farm!

So we took a trip to a vegetable farm that is based out of south Georgia. When we got there, we got onto a school bus that rode us around so we didn't have to walk. We were surprised to see that all of the school buses used to transport employees were actually driven from Georgia! We found one that said DeKalb county. Since Juan and Boomer are both from Georgia, we made them take a picture in front of it, which happens to be posted on the left! Seeing the farm and employees at work was really interesting. We even got to share lunch with the employees. I tried to go eat next to this female employee, but she treated me like an outsider and went to sit with other employees :( It was actually pretty funny, though.

We were given a tour so we could view the process of planting, growing, picking, and sorting the vegetables. It was interesting when we were shown the sorting process. Some of the vegetables are abnormally small or abnormally large and have to be thrown out because people won't buy them! I thought that was so strange! Our tour guide was telling us that they separate the vegetables based on grade. He took us into this big refrigerated room where the packaged vegetables stay until they are picked up. We saw that the ones with higher quality were sent to stores like Fresh Market and that the lower quality vegetables were sent to places like Walmart.

It was so interesting to see this kind of process. I've never seen anything like that before! It's amazing to see all of the work that goes into production!
